About coins and medals
Coins are the most common precious find for real detectorists, and the most telling: a coin carries a ruler, a mint or a date, so it can place a whole site in time. Gold coins were rarely lost by accident — they were hidden, hoarded or buried, which is why a single gold piece in a field usually means a story. Medals and medallions were struck to mark victories, reigns, harvests and celebrations, and were kept as keepsakes long after the event.
